The Department has always shared the vision of the Institute in striving for excellence in research and teaching activities and has succeeded in this endeavor to a large extent. Over the years, the department has evolved as one of the premier departments in the country providing excellent teaching and research in mathematical and statistical sciences. The vibrant academic environment is nurtured by strongly motivated faculty and provides an opportunity to pursue research in front line areas of basic sciences as well as in interdisciplinary areas of sciences and technology. In the coming decade, apart from the existing areas, the department intends to develop areas related to mathematical aspects of computing science in all its manifestations.

 

MSc in Mathematics is a two-year programme spreading over four semesters that aims at developing mathematical ability in students with acute and abstract reasoning. The programme will enable students to cultivate a mathematician’s habit of thought and reasoning and will enlighten students with mathematical ideas relevant for oneself and for the course itself.

 

The program offers a proficient education in Mathematics, including a strong foundation in core concepts and the flexibility to specialize in specific areas. Training on mathematical software and the inclusion of skill enhancement courses, as well as opportunities for research projects, ensures that students are prepared for a wide range of opportunities in both academia and industry. The specialization courses allow students to explore deeper into specific areas of Mathematics and its applications, preparing them for advanced research and industry opportunities. The program is offered through Lectures, Seminars, Workshops, Group Discussions, and talks by experts.

The BSc undergraduate program in Computer Science and Mathematics provides students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary education that combines the principles of computer science with the analytical rigour of mathematics. Designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the program equips them with a strong foundation in programming, algorithms, data structures, and software engineering while fostering advanced mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Students explore various topics such as discrete mathematics, calculus, and linear algebra, gaining a deep understanding of the mathematical foundations that underpin Computer Science applications.  Through hands-on projects, collaborative research opportunities, and real-world applications, students develop proficiency in coding and computational techniques and learn to apply mathematical concepts to solve complex problems in various domains. The Bachelor of Science programme in Economics, Mathematics and Statistics with Econometrics Honors/Honors with Research is an interdisciplinary programme offered jointly by the School of sciences and School of social sciences. This programme is uniquely designed for students who are interested in studying Economics with a solid understanding of quantitative methods derived from Mathematics and Statistics. The courses in Mathematics and Statistics 

offered are aimed at providing an excellent foundation for the quantitative study of Economics. After the successful completion of the three-year degree programme, the students have the option to do an honors programme/honors programme with research in econometrics or pursue graduate studies in economics, finance, actuarial science, data science, statistics, mathematics and related subjects.
