Programme Overview

About the Programme

The Bachelor of Science programme in Economics, Mathematics and Statistics with Econometrics Honors/Honors with Research is an interdisciplinary programme offered jointly by the School of sciences and School of social sciences. This programme is uniquely designed for students who are interested in studying Economics with a solid understanding of quantitative methods derived from Mathematics and Statistics. The courses in Mathematics and Statistics offered are aimed at providing an excellent foundation for the quantitative study of Economics. After the successful completion of the three-year degree programme, the students have the option to do an honors programme/honors programme with research in econometrics or pursue graduate studies in economics, finance, actuarial science, data science, statistics, mathematics and related subjects.

Interdisciplinary Synergy

The programme bridges the gap between social sciences and exact sciences by integrating the analytical depth of Economics with the logical rigour of Mathematics and Statistics.

Quantitative Foundation

A core focus of the curriculum is building robust mathematical and statistical skills. Students master complex data analysis, mathematical modelling, and statistical inference, which serve as the essential language for modern economic theory and research.

Econometrics Specialization

Moving beyond general theory, the programme offers a dedicated track for Econometrics Honours. This allows students to apply mathematical models to real-world economic data, enabling them to forecast trends, evaluate policies, and conduct high-level empirical research.

Research & Advanced Pathways

Equips students with strong quantitative, computational, and analytical skills for higher studies, research, and industry applications. The pathway prepares students for global graduate programmes and careers in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, Quantitative Finance, Analytics, and academic research.

Why at Bangalore Central Campus

Why Choose This Programme?

Rigorous Core Curriculum

The programme provides a deep dive into the fundamental principles of Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics. Students build a strong theoretical base that serves as a launchpad for advanced analytical thinking and complex problem-solving in global financial landscapes.

Theory-to-Practice Integration

Bridging the gap between the classroom and the industry, this focus ensures that abstract concepts are applied to real-world economic scenarios. Students learn to translate theoretical models into actionable insights for policy-making and business strategy.

Scientific computational skills

In an increasingly data-driven world, students gain hands-on proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Python, R, and Tableau. This technical training enables them to handle big data, perform sophisticated econometrics, and create impactful data visualisations.

Experiential Learning through Internships

Through mandatory internships and value-added courses, students gain direct exposure to professional environments. This practical requirement ensures they graduate with professional work experience and a refined set of soft skills required by top-tier employers.

Global Professional Certifications

The curriculum is aligned with globally recognised certifications, including the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) and Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC). These credentials validate students' expertise in financial markets and enhance their global employability.

Community engagement

Beyond technical expertise, the programme emphasizes social consciousness and the development of responsible global citizens and leaders. Through service learning courses, SDG-aligned projects, and field/industry visits, students are encouraged to apply quantitative and analytical skills to solve real-world problems while fostering ethical values, leadership, and social responsibility.

Message from the HOD

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics

"Mathematics is not just about numbers, formulas, or calculations. It is about learning how to think, reason, question, and solve problems with confidence."

As you step into our department, you become part of a community that has been nurturing young minds since 1969. Over the years, we have grown into a vibrant academic family where learning goes beyond classrooms, examinations, and grades. We believe that mathematics is not merely a subject—it is a powerful way to understand the world and develop the skills needed to make a meaningful difference in it.

At the Department of Mathematics, our mission is simple yet purposeful: to organize, create, connect, and communicate mathematical ideas effectively through 4D's,

Dedication – Giving our best in everything we do.

Determination – Persisting through challenges and learning from setbacks.

Discipline – Developing consistency, responsibility, and academic integrity.

Direction – Setting meaningful goals and working towards them with purpose.

These are not just values we teach; they are values we strive to live every day. We strive to create an environment where curiosity is encouraged, questions are valued, and every student is empowered to discover their potential.

Learning with Purpose

Our undergraduate programmes are designed to provide a strong mathematical foundation while encouraging students to explore connections to technology, data science, economics, research, and other emerging fields. We want our students to understand not only how mathematics works but also why it matters.

One of the unique opportunities we offer is the Undergraduate Research Immersion Programme (UGRIP), which introduces students to research early in their academic journey. Through faculty mentorship and structured research activities, students learn to think independently, ask meaningful questions, and contribute to solving real-world problems.

For postgraduate students, the focus shifts toward deeper understanding, advanced analytical skills, and specialized knowledge. Our programmes prepare students for careers in academia, industry, research, finance, technology, and beyond.

Our doctoral scholars are part of a thriving research ecosystem that encourages innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence. Supported by experienced faculty mentors and international collaborations, they contribute to the creation of new knowledge and the advancement of the frontiers of mathematics.

Beyond the Classroom

We believe that true education extends beyond textbooks and lectures. Therefore, we encourage our students to engage in internships, research projects, seminars, workshops, fests, competitions, service-learning and community-based initiatives.

These experiences help students develop not only academic competence but also communication skills, leadership qualities, teamwork, adaptability, and social responsibility. Our goal is to nurture individuals who are academically strong, professionally competent, and socially conscious.

Supporting Your Aspirations through Scholarships

We recognize and celebrate talent and hard work. Through research scholarships, publication incentives, conference support, internships, and merit-based awards, we encourage students to dream bigger and pursue excellence.

Whether your ambition is to become a researcher, educator, data scientist, analyst, entrepreneur, or industry professional, we are committed to supporting your journey.

Our Faculty: Your Mentors

The greatest strength of our department is its people. Our faculty members are not only teachers and researchers but also mentors who genuinely care about every student's growth and success.

They are committed to creating a learning environment that is intellectually stimulating, supportive, and inspiring. Their guidance helps students navigate academic challenges, discover opportunities, and build confidence in their abilities.

A Journey of Growth

As you begin your journey with us, I encourage you to make the most of every opportunity. Ask questions. Explore new ideas. Participate actively. Challenge yourself. Learn from failures. Celebrate successes. Most importantly, never stop being curious.

The years you spend here will shape not only your academic future but also your character, values, and outlook on life.

Welcome to a department that believes in excellence, innovation, and holistic growth.

We look forward to learning, growing, and achieving together.
