About the Programme
The PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies emerges at a moment when higher education and research face a critical inflection point. Across the globe, questions of human mobility, environmental change, technological disruption, and social justice are redefining the very meaning of progress. In India, these realities are visible in the everyday—mass migration, climate displacement, urban inequality, and the ethical dilemmas of automation. Yet research that connects these themes across disciplines remains fragmented and insufficient. The Department of Liberal Arts at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) occupies a unique position to address this gap. It has, over the past two years, evolved into one of the country’s few spaces where humanities, social sciences, and technology converge through research, field engagement, and policy dialogue. The department’s work—spanning migration and displacement studies, sustainability and heritage, AI and society, and community engagement—has already generated externally funded projects, collaborative grants, and national recognition. Establishing a doctoral program is therefore not an expansion but a natural progression of the department's academic maturity and institutional mission.
